A Lion at A Cocktail Party
Many of these surreal prose poems first appeared in George Hitchcock's noted magazine kayak. Several have been anthologized. They are among the disturbing of Hogan's works. His poetry, while often written from darkness, contains flashes of light and redemption. These prose poems are unrelenting, but there is a kind of gallows humor which rewards the reader. Rochelle Ratner writing in the Library Journal noted that "Hogan is a master craftsman with a positive uplifting humor."
